Avalanche snow on frozen lake

A period of heavy rain allowed Grewingk Lake to freeze into a smooth sheet, but it also triggered avalanches on the surrounding slopes. This one made it to the water, breaking the weak ice there.
— What are those dirty snowballs? This is an avalanche deposit that came from the mountain above Grewingk Lake. This avalanche happened during warm rains and snows that happened just before the cold spell when we visited. This warm rain is the reason why the lake ice was smooth enough to skate on. Because the slopes are so steep, the avalanche mixed with sediment, and it was so sticky it formed these balls - now frozen hard.
