Crossing icy tide flats: Hig carries his packraft across the icy tide flats at Controller Bay. Freeze up is the most difficult season. Deep snow and thin ice kept us pinned to the coast, where we walked through storm after storm - four in nine days. Hig stuffed armfuls of beach grass into his pack, using it to line his raft for warmth on the chilly crossings.
