Ancient grave:
This circle of stones marks a grave, one of many on this hill.
It wasn't until after we'd set up camp that we realized we were on the edge of a graveyard. Nearby a human skull protruded from the tundra. It appeared the graves were constructed from heavy cobbles holding down driftwood that protected the grave. Another grave was marked with the eroded remains of a large whale bone, as is traditional for whaling captains. Earlier we'd passed grassy pits near the beach - likely the remains of house pits. We had no way of knowing how long ago this place had been abandoned by people. Perhaps after the 1918 flu epidemic? Perhaps much longer ago...
