Open Lead

In March, most streams and rivers are frozen, but open water patches (open leads) can form where groundwater enters the stream.
— These photos were compiled for a project looking at open leads as evidence of groundwater flow near the Pebble Mine Prospect in southwest Alaska. Most photos from ground-level were taken in March 2008 during our long trek from Seattle to the Aleutians. The aerial images were taken during a survey flight on 11 March 2011.
