Bear-gnawed tree

A bear recently peeled this cottonwood and scraped cambium from beneath the bark. This was photographed in summer of 2017, and such tree damage was unusually widespread this summer. It may be that the bears were hungry - 2016 was a great year for them, so the population may have been higher, and the berries were few and late in 2017.
