In Wrangell, we sat in a new friend’s cozy kitchen, listening to the staccato drumming of rain on the roof as we waited for the marine weather forecast. For a few more weeks, we were still in the Inside Passage, where steep terrain, intricate bays, and thick bushwhacks pinned us down to a route that was largely marine. But it was already late September, and with each day, we worried that the window of paddling season was closing...
